Stockholm Syndrome is when a captive feels positive emotions for their captor because they mistake a lack of abusive behavior for kindness, however while Belle agrees to stay with the Beast (a choice that was made by herself in the first place, not by her father or the Beast), she constantly stands up to the Beast and defies his threats and punishments when he treats her badly, therefore not allowing him any power over her beyond being able to keep her in the same general location. She doesn't show him any affection until he finally stops acting like a jerk (he doesn't display any abusive behavior after she saves his life) and starts consistently treating her with respect. And it is only after the Beast frees Belle, making them complete equals with no power imbalance at all in their relationship that she's able to finally fall in love with him. It's also clear that while the Beast had an outside motivation to make Belle like him and to change his behavior, the changes in his character are genuine as seen in his act of mercy in sparing Gaston's life in the climax of the film. If anything, the story is about Lima Syndrome, in which a captor feels affection for their captive. Additionally, the idea that the story is about Stockholm Syndrome ignores the fact that the original fairy tale it was based off of was meant to be an allegory for arranged marriages and for the apprehension and fear a young bride would feel about starting a new life with a strange man she might not like at first.

Symptoms: depression, bouts of mania, suicidal thoughts, slight insomnia, feelings of helplessness and dependence on others, the tendency to lose oneself in vivid daydreams, an intense longing for people and things one can never have, a strong sense of aestheticism and an appreciation for the beauty in little things, the urge to decorate everything with daisy chains.

We should supply homeless women with menstrual cups instead of tampons. They’re easy to clean anywhere there’s running water so they can be rinsed in a public restroom if desired, you can wear them longer than tampons, they come in various sizes and brands (just like tampons), they last for years (unlike tampons), and they don’t carry the risk of toxic shock syndrome. Menstrual cups can be emptied and put back in so they don’t create litter and the women will have less items to carry around with them

Being popular and going to a school dance or event with someone that has down syndrome or autism or any other disability is not “brave” it’s not an “inspiration” it’s being a fucking person. It shouldn’t be this this huge thing like “Wow. She’s attractive and took a kid in a wheelchair to Prom. She’s so amazing.” No. People with disabilities are not items. They are not charity cases. They are people. Treat them as such.

I lived in a room and board that failed the burrito test. (”If you’re not allowed to get up in the middle of the night to microwave a burrito, you live in an institution.”) No one stopped me from going to bed, but they did tell me I had to have my lights out by 10, and that I had to be out of the house by 10 the next morning. When I complained to my outpatient program that I needed more help than I was getting, they threatened me with board and care, where my cell phone would be taken away and I would lose contact with the outside world. My case manager sounded so damn smug, like he had caught me out, when he said, “if you’re really as helpless as you say, then you need to be in a board and care.” Like my only options were struggling to do things I couldn’t do, or surrendering my life to an institution.
When I tried to talk about these things with other people, they always rationalized it away. (I told my dad once that my caseworker was reading my e-mails as I wrote them, demonstrating extreme disrespect for my privacy, and he said, “Well, she’s probably making sure you don’t use the internet to goof off.” I was 22 years old.)
People tend to mock the idea that telling an adult when to go to bed, when to eat, etc., is a human rights violation, even though they would find it outrageous and absurd if anyone came into their lives to do the same thing to them.
And this is what people seem to think when they tell disabled activists we’re just not disabled enough to understand that some people really do need to be locked up and deprived of all autonomy.
